A timepiece originally designed by master watchmakers George Thomas and Hartwig Balke for their personal use, the Classic Chronograph was officially launched into the Masterpiece Collection back in 2014. Working in close collaboration with the German master of hand-guilloche and dial-making, Jochen Benzinger, TWC produced 25 Classic Chronographs after three years in the making. The hefty instrument is reminiscent of a “clock on the wrist.’” The oval-shaped pushers, 15.5mm thickness, and satin-finished midsection of the 42mm stainless steel case give an industrial elegance to the piece. The traditional structure is accompanied by a solid silver Guilloche dial with Roman numerals and blue steeled spear-shaped hands. The 25 jewel, highly-decorated ETA/Valjoux Cal. 7750 automatic movement is visible through a sapphire crystal on the back. Every component of the case, dial, and hands was made and assembled by hand.
Featuring a heat-treated sterling silver dial with Roman numerals, rhodium-plated spear-shaped and blued steel cathedral hands, as well as a sweep second with a split tip. The guilloche pattern was hand-turned using a vintage rose engine. The stainless steel case has a diameter of 42mm and a width of 15.5mm. It features oval-shaped chronograph pushers, a high-polish bezel and a satin-finish midsection that together produce a strikingly elegant and traditional appearance. The decorated automatic movement is visible through the sapphire crystal exhibition caseback, featuring perlage, blued screws and Geneva stripes. A 25 jewel highest-grade Caliber 7750 automatic movement with Swiss-made components. Assembled, modified and decorated by master watchmakers in the TWC workshops. Regulated to five positions, ensuring daily accuracy of +/- 3 seconds. Functions include: chronograph, minute-counter at 12 o'clock, hour-counter at the 6 o'clock position, sweep-second, minute, hour, constantly rotating second on 9 o'clock position, Start/Stop at 2 o'clock, reset at 4 o'clock position. The piece is water resistant to 50m and has a strap width of 22mm.
Hartwig Balke first conceived this special chronograph edition of the Towson Classic while admiring a collection of vintage clocks in his personal collection. He was inspired by their ability to purely communicate the significance of time itself, in which the experience of reading time from a clock had a certain formality and sophistication to it. The clocks weren't just pleasant to look at, they radiated this deeper essence about time. Hartwig wanted to replicate this unique effect of a classic clock in a chronograph wristwatch. He prototyped a design for years before collaborating with close friend and collaborator, Jochen Benzinger, to finally execute the sterling silver guilloche dial.
